Playing golf has become a White House tradition for more than a century now, with almost all U.S. presidents showing an affinity for the sport even while they were in office.

William Howard Taft was the first seated president to openly proclaim his love for golf, so much so that he even played high-profile rounds with well-known people and served as honorary chairman of the U.S. Open after finishing his term. Before his time, U.S. presidents typically played away from public spotlight, and golf was seen as an upper-class sport.

But even with Taft’s contribution to the sport, there was another U.S. president who probably loved it more. And that president is Dwight Eisenhower.

In the eight years that Eisenhower was in the White House, it was said that he had played more than 800 rounds in total, which is equivalent to two rounds every week. He was quite enthused with golf that he even had a putting green outside his office, with which he would practice every morning.

World Golf Hall of Fame and Museum historian Dr. Tony Parker credits Eisenhower’s passion for golf for spurring many Americans to take an interest in the sport. According to Golf Advisor, the number of individuals who played golf increased by more than two times during his White House tenure.

Robert Mims, here. Watch out for my golf blog, CPA or Come Play After, a venture I will be starting in soon. In the meantime, read more articles about the sport here.
